Car Seat Woes

We just can't catch a break in our quest for a car seat for Riley. She is slightly over the weight-limit for her car seat. Currently, our non-options are:
1. Leave her in her current seat and use the seat belt. But here's the rub, we don't have the latch system on either of our cars, so the seat would not be anchored to the car. The seat belt would be holding both Riley and the seat in. So, not an option.
2. Put her in the backless boosters that go for $20. Not gonna do that. Riley is just not big enough or tall enough (well, the manufacturers say she is, but still, I'm her mother and I say no.)
3. Buy a car seat with a higher weight-limit for the harness. Seems perfect, right? Well, as I was shopping around, all the seats said that the car absolutely must have a top tether. Well, our car doesn't BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE THE LATCH SYSTEM GOSH DARN IT!!!

So, our REAL options are:
1. Buy two new cars. Wait, let me stop laughing before I move on.....
2. Get the latch system retrofit in both of our cars and buy new car seats. This is really our only option. I don't know how much this costs or how safe it is compared to factory-installed latch systems.

So, there we are. And of course, this is all waaaaaay over Rudi's head, so I deal with this all alone. Luckily, or not, his gas tank is leaking and I'll see if they can install a latch system when they fix it next week.
