Riley's First Day of School: 1st Grade!
Thursday, September 23, 2010 by Amy
Riley was up-and-at-'em on her first day, so excited to start school. We arrived early so that we could meet her teacher. Miss Foster seems like she'll be a great teacher for Riley. There are only two first grade classes at Dyer Elementary, so the school's not HUGE, but definitely larger than Golden Mountain. After meeting Miss Foster, she took her out onto the playground (there is playground supervision starting at 8:30 until 8:45 when school starts) and she found a girl named Elise who helped Riley find where to line up when the bell rang, and helped her with the morning routines. After that, Riley just ran onto the playground with Elise and didn't even hug me or say good-bye!
When we picked Riley up, we waited out front for her class to file out. Miss Foster told us that Riley had a great first day. Riley wouldn't really tell me when she did, but she had a lot of fun and said that she made a couple new friends.
Her folder, of course, was bursting with paperwork for me, and a weeks worth of homework for her. She was eager to do her homework, and completed the whole weeks' worth. It seemed easy for her, but perhaps that's because it's the beginning of the year. She could even read the directions. However, her word problem confused her because it had to do with removing sections of a dock from the water. Riley was like, what's a dock? What are dock sections? and why do you remove them from the water? Welcome to Maine, dear!
Avery was jealous of Riley's homework, so I had to dig out some workbooks and give her a few pages to do. Guess I'll have to do that every day that Riley has homework.
Riley also came home from school without attitude. She was unusually happy, helpful, and cooperative. Avery was not. She just was a huge turd.
This morning, I told Riley that I was taking a shower before school, and she was not happy with that. She was waiting by the door, eager to get on her way. She did give me a hug and a kiss today, though :) But we couldn't get to school soon enough for her! We got there right at 8:30 so any earlier and we'd have been too early!
While walking Lola, I found a footpath that cuts the 1/4 mile walk to school down to about 1/8 mile. We get there lickety-split! And because the playground is so close, we often walk there after dinner and on the weekends to play:
Look at the muscles on that girl! She is so powerful!
My paparazzi shot of Riley as I was leaving the school.
After dropping Riley off, I came home and did the dishes and some laundry. Avery kept saying "I'm glad Riley's not here," but on her face was utter boredom. None of us know what to do without Riley here telling us what to do, so we all three took naps! When we picked Riley up, we waited out front for her class to file out.
