Back-To-School Night!

Stupid thing like back-to-school night make me giddy. I'm weird. I think things like that make me feel like a grown up :) At the age of 34, I still don't feel like an adult!
All I can say about Dyer School is WOW! Love it! Miss Foster has been teaching for 25 years, and over the years she has amassed an amazing quantity of books. Holy cow, every wall is filled with organized little bins of books. Literally, no exaggeration, she has a couple thousand at least. Just totally awesome.
Miss Foster also said that she would ask the speech therapist to listen to Riley's r's and figure out where to go from there. It'll be nice to get that issue resolved!
Also, Miss Foster was talking about the reading program. Apparently, the kids are evaluated by the reading specialist and given a level so that appropriate books can be selected for each child. Miss Foster said that most kids are between level 3 and 5, with a couple above level 10. The end-of-the-year goal is for all kids to have reached or exceeded level 18. Riley is a level 14 now. She's a great reader! Riley told me last night that the reading specialist had a hard time finding books that were hard enough for her.
I will be volunteering in Riley's class one day every week. Honestly, I have been struggling with guilt over doing things with Avery while Riley is in school, and Riley is insanely jealous and hurt by the things we do while she's in school. This will be a great opportunity for Riley-and-Mommy time!
This is Riley, posing on her way to school, with a leaf that she was particularly fond of. Riley and Avery are really excited about the leaf colors here. Colorado trees only turned yellow.
I've been researching some fun things Avery and I can do on a regular basis, to fill our days and weeks. I think that Greenlight Studio in Portland looks fun, and we'll check it out on Monday when the admission is only $5 total. If we like it, we'll make it our regular Monday activity. I think we can swing $5 a week, as long as we don't eat there.
The Children's Museum of Maine looks awesome too. Children's museums tend to be expensive, but are also usually worth every penny. I figure we'll go once, and then get a membership if we dig it (and I'm sure we will!) I mean, admissions are $9 per person. So a family of four would be $36. Although I expect that we will all go sometimes, mostly it will be just me and Avery. But anyway, family membership is $95 for the year. Certainly cheaper than paying for each visit! Plus, the Children's Museum is only 3.5 miles away. The girls LOVED the children's museum in Denver, but it was just so far away. I figure that a membership will become particularly useful in the winter months.
