A Couple Quick Things I Love About Maine (so far)

First, there's tons of local and organic products available.  Like, a ton.  Plus, they don't shaft you on the prices like they seem to do everywhere else.  Of course, there are some exceptions, but for the most part they are competitively priced, and often even cheaper.  We got local handmade butter for a lower price than factory butter.  Potatoes are the same.  Even local mustard, honey, jams, just everything under the sun.  And when I say "local," I mean just down the street.  Our milk is from Scarbourough, which is about 3 miles down the road :)

Also, there are so many local people who supply wooden products.  When we moved, we couldn't take the girls' play kitchen.  There was just NO way that it would fit.  The girls were devastated, and I promised them a new one.  I wanted to "upgrade" to a simpler, solid wood, design that was not so gaudy and colorful.  Then I started looking around and it made me want to cry.  I just love how new-age hippy stuff is priced so only wealthy people can afford them.  Geez...

...but then I found this local store that sells unfinished solid wood furniture.  I swear, it's going to be my new favorite place!  In case you don't know, "unfinished" or "assembly required" are some of my favorite words.  I loooooooove finishing furniture.  Something about the sanding and staining really gets me going.  Anyway, I found unfinished solid wood play kitchen components for $89.99!

So, the girls might just get their Christmas wish afterall.   Now, I'm not saying that they'll get all three pieces, but it's food for thought.  This store is just in the next town over (or down, or up, whatever.  No mountains here, so I can't tell my cardinal directions).  They look like good quality, so I think I'll stop by and test them out myself.  Although they come fully-assembled, they will have to be disassembled in order to be finished, so I get the added joy of reassembling!  Bonus for me!
