Mesa Top Sites

There are over 4000 archaeological sites in Mesa Verde. Only a few are open to the public, so many are visible from the road or on short walks. The Mesa Top loop offered views of several cliff houses. Way cool. I mean, we couldn't even get pictures of them all, or even find them all. This is called the best view in Mesa Verde, as so much could be seen from this overlook.
Oak Tree House A.D. 1250
Fire Temple & New Fire House A.D. 1250
Fire Temple is on the left and is the ceremonial area. The two levels of residential alcoves on the right is New Fire House. Just inbetween the two towers on the top level, you can see the hand-and-toe holds that lead to the lower level. Crazy! I seriously wonder how many Anasazi remains have been found that bear the signs of having fallen from great heights.
Square Tower House Overlook A.D. 1200-1300
This one is known for it's four-story tower, hence the name. I can't imagine building something that tall with the technology available 800 years ago! And doing it so well that it's still standing!Oak Tree House A.D. 1250
(Click on the picture, it's a panorama! You've gotta see it bigger)
