A Beach Picnic...

...at Old Orchard Beach, in pictures.

Rudi and I were laughing, because Riley runs everywhere like she's being shot at LOL!  In a zig-zag fashion, leaping and bounding, skipping and jumping.  Never just running.

Carrying a very heavy bucket of too-wet sand.  Riley is an impatient perfectionist, which is not a good combination

Riley's attempts at making sandcastles didn't go so well, so she quickly turned to other pursuits.

Okay, this is a weird picture, let me explain.  I asked Riley if the water was cold, so she brought me a bucket of water.  I looked at it an exclaimed, "this is ocean water?"  The water was so clear I seriously had no idea where she had gotten it.

Yeah.  Good idea.

Now, Rudi wouldn't let Riley wear a bathing suit, but I ask this:  If she's going to get THIS wet, why not just let her just wear a bathing suit already?  Seriously!

We packed a picnic of egg salad for me and Rudi, leftover chicken for the girls, watermelon, pears, bananas, and carrot sticks.  The girls loved the idea of a picnic at the beach and were all a-twitter as soon as they woke up that morning.

Avery was a very patient sandcastle builder.  She has a process and she if it does not work, she tries again without complaint. She didn't want to be too far away from me and Rudi, so she brought wet sand from further out and brought it back.  Then she found that she could bring some water and make her own wet sand near us.  She smoothed out a patch of sand and overturned the mold onto it and tapped the top with a shovel and lifted the mold off.  Voila!  Very precise, all of this!  She quietly worked on castle building forever.  She gets so involved!

Making wet sand with a bucket of water and a sieve.

There were horses on the beach.  Neat-O.  The girls went over to get a closer look and then got distracted by a very large stick.  As far as I can tell, the horses didn't leave manure on the beach before they left.  Phew!

Rudi thought he saw a jet plane chasing a flying saucer.  Seriously.  Also, seriously don't tell him I posted this.  Because for some reason I still love him LOL!

Since Riley has the uncanny ability to find a big stick wherever she goes, here it is!  It's only a portion of the "very large stick" that distracted them from the horses.

What the Donschikowski's do best.  Eat ice cream.  Except Riley has a chocolate covered frozen banana.  I ate Avery's leftovers.  This was the only money we spent all day.  Pretty sweet.
